Stress is a normal part of life and can arise in response to pressure, change, uncertainty or demanding circumstances. While short periods of stress are common, prolonged or persistent stress can begin to affect how we think, feel and function in everyday life.
Stress is highly individual. Situations that one person finds manageable may feel overwhelming to another, and stress can arise from professional pressures as well as significant changes or demands in our personal lives.
I work with adults experiencing stress in a wide range of circumstances, including workplace pressure, periods of change, demanding professional environments, performance-related pressure and situations where multiple responsibilities have become difficult to manage.
“Annette has been fantastically helpful for me, straight from the first session I was sure that I’d made the right decision in booking a session. She has really helped me transform how I deal with stressful situations. I am now able to take a step back from challenges and think clearly in making decisions. In addition to this she’s helped me learn relaxation and mindfulness techniques, which have helped me to really develop a feeling of calmness and reduce anxiety. This has had an immense impact on my life as I feel I can now be myself in all situations, without anxiety holding me back.”
How Stress Can Affect Us
Stress can affect people in different ways and may involve:
- Feeling overwhelmed or under persistent pressure
- Difficulty switching off or relaxing
- Persistent worrying or overthinking
- Irritability or feeling more emotionally reactive
- Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
- Changes in sleep
- Physical tension
- Feeling mentally or physically exhausted
- Reduced confidence when dealing with demanding situations
- Difficulty maintaining perspective when under pressure
Stress may be associated with work, relationships, caring responsibilities, significant life changes, uncertainty or a combination of different pressures.
For some people, stress occurs alongside anxiety, perfectionism, confidence difficulties or performance-related concerns.
Working With Stress
My approach combines Solution Focused Therapy, clinical hypnotherapy, coaching and evidence-informed psychological approaches according to the individual and the circumstances they are experiencing.
Our work may involve exploring the situations contributing to stress, patterns of thinking and behaviour that may be maintaining pressure, and the way the body and nervous system respond during demanding periods.
Depending on your individual circumstances, sessions may incorporate therapeutic discussion, clinical hypnosis, guided relaxation, cognitive reframing, mindfulness and approaches to nervous-system regulation.
Rather than following a standard stress-management programme, the work is tailored to the individual, their circumstances and the particular pressures they are experiencing.
Stress, Work & Performance Under Pressure
Stress can become particularly noticeable in demanding professional environments or during periods of increased responsibility, uncertainty or change.
I work with adults experiencing workplace stress and pressure associated with meetings, presentations, deadlines, professional responsibility, career changes and other situations involving visibility, evaluation or performance.
My work considers how stress and anxiety can affect cognition, communication, emotional regulation and functioning under pressure.
For people whose difficulties are primarily associated with workplace situations, you can also read about my work with Workplace Anxiety.
A Personalised Approach
I have worked with adults experiencing stress, anxiety, confidence difficulties and performance-related concerns for over fourteen years.
Clients come from a wide range of professional, creative and public-facing backgrounds, including healthcare, education, business, law, media and the performing arts.
Sessions are personalised according to the individual rather than based on assumptions about what should or should not feel stressful to them.
Sessions are available in person at my Bristol practices in Clifton and Queen Square, as well as online throughout the UK.
