Confidence can affect how we approach work, relationships, social situations, decision-making and unfamiliar or challenging situations. When confidence is low, people may doubt their abilities, worry excessively about how they are perceived or avoid opportunities they would otherwise like to pursue.
Confidence is not necessarily a fixed personality trait. It can be influenced by experience, patterns of thinking, self-perception and the way we respond to challenging situations.
I work with adults experiencing confidence difficulties in both their personal and professional lives, combining coaching, Solution Focused Therapy, clinical hypnotherapy and evidence-informed psychological approaches according to the individual.
“Annette is absolutely fantastic, offering a standard that goes above and beyond what is expected in the world of counselling and therapy. I would 100% recommend her to anyone in need of help and I would urge those in need to find her and get in touch!”
What Can Affect Confidence?
Confidence difficulties can develop for many different reasons and may be associated with:
- Fear of judgement – worrying about how other people perceive or evaluate you.
- Self-doubt – questioning your abilities, decisions or whether you are “good enough”.
- Past experiences – experiences that have affected the way you see yourself or approach particular situations.
- Fear of making mistakes – worrying about getting things wrong, being criticised or not meeting expectations.
- Perfectionism – setting extremely high standards and judging yourself harshly when you feel you have fallen short.
- Anxiety – feeling less able to trust yourself when anxious, under pressure or outside familiar situations.
For some people, confidence difficulties are general. For others, they arise in particular contexts such as work, relationships, public speaking, interviews, meetings, performance or social situations.
Developing Confidence
Building confidence does not mean becoming a different person or eliminating every moment of uncertainty.
Our work may involve identifying patterns of thinking and behaviour that contribute to self-doubt, developing a more balanced perspective, recognising existing strengths and abilities, and gradually approaching situations that may previously have felt difficult or uncomfortable.
Depending on your individual circumstances, we may work on:
- Fear of judgement and criticism
- Self-doubt and negative self-talk
- Confidence in professional situations
- Speaking up in meetings or conversations
- Interviews and career progression
- Social confidence
- Performance confidence
- Perfectionism and fear of making mistakes
- Trusting your own judgement and abilities
Hypnotherapy and Coaching for Confidence
My approach combines therapeutic conversation, coaching and clinical hypnosis.
Solution Focused Therapy provides a framework for exploring what you would like to be different, identifying existing strengths and resources, and considering practical ways of moving towards your goals.
Clinical hypnosis can be incorporated into this work through focused attention, relaxation, guided imagery and therapeutic suggestion.
Coaching and other evidence-informed psychological approaches may also be incorporated where appropriate, allowing the work to be tailored to your particular circumstances and goals.
What Happens in a Session?
Every session is personalised to the individual.
We begin with therapeutic discussion and Solution Focused work, exploring what has been happening, what you would like to change and the progress or differences you may already be noticing.
The second part of the session usually incorporates guided hypnosis as part of the wider therapeutic process.
Sessions last approximately 55 minutes and are available in person at my Bristol practices in Clifton and Queen Square, as well as online throughout the UK.
Experience
I have worked with adults experiencing anxiety, confidence difficulties and performance-related concerns for over fourteen years.
Clients come from a wide range of professional, creative and public-facing backgrounds, including healthcare, education, business, law, media and the performing arts. Some seek support for general confidence difficulties, while others are preparing for interviews, presentations, meetings, performances or other situations in which confidence becomes particularly important.
