Hypnotherapy for Fear of Blushing

Fear of blushing can affect confidence in social, professional and everyday situations. Although blushing is a natural, involuntary physical response, becoming anxious about when it might happen or whether other people will notice can create considerable self-consciousness.

Many people find themselves anticipating blushing before meetings, presentations, conversations, dates or social events. The more attention becomes focused on the possibility of blushing, the more difficult it can be to concentrate on what is actually happening around you.

My approach combines Solution Focused Therapy, clinical hypnotherapy, coaching and evidence-informed psychological approaches to work with the anxiety and self-consciousness surrounding blushing and explore confidence in situations where it has previously been a concern.

‘I was apprehensive about finding the right hypnotherapist to help me manage my anxiety but as soon as I met Annette I knew I had made the right decision. She is such a wonderful listener and so positive that it was easy to talk with her and start to find solutions. She is very knowledgeable and really helped me to find ways to manage my stress levels and anxiety. I feel so much calmer and happier now and I have a ‘toolkit’ of strategies to help me when I start to feel anxious. I wholeheartedly recommend her.’

Why Do We Blush?

Blushing is an involuntary response involving the autonomic nervous system and increased blood flow close to the surface of the skin. It commonly affects the face but may also be noticeable around the ears, neck or chest.

It can occur in response to embarrassment, unexpected attention, anxiety, excitement or feeling observed or evaluated by others. For someone who has become particularly conscious of blushing, the possibility of it happening can itself become a source of anxiety.

The Fear of Blushing

Fear of blushing, sometimes referred to as erythrophobia, can create a cycle of anticipatory anxiety and heightened self-awareness.

You may find yourself:

  • Worrying in advance about whether you will blush
  • Monitoring your face for heat or redness
  • Feeling uncomfortable when attention is directed towards you
  • Avoiding eye contact or situations where you may feel exposed
  • Becoming anxious in meetings, presentations or conversations
  • Worrying about what other people might think if they notice
  • Replaying interactions afterwards
  • Avoiding situations because of the possibility of blushing

For some people, fear of blushing occurs alongside social anxiety. For others, blushing itself is the principal concern.

Hypnotherapy for Fear of Blushing

My work focuses on the anxiety, anticipation and self-consciousness surrounding blushing rather than simply trying to control an involuntary physical response.

Using Solution Focused Therapy alongside clinical hypnotherapy, we may work with fear of judgement, anticipatory anxiety, heightened awareness of physical sensations, self-monitoring and patterns of thinking that can intensify anxiety.

Sessions may incorporate therapeutic discussion, clinical hypnosis, guided relaxation, cognitive reframing and practical strategies for exploring different responses in situations where blushing has previously been a concern.

The aim is not to eliminate a normal physical response, but to work with the fear, attention and self-consciousness surrounding it.

Who I Work With

I work with adults whose fear of blushing affects different areas of their personal, social or professional lives.

For some, it is most noticeable during meetings, presentations or conversations at work. For others, it may arise when meeting new people, dating, socialising, speaking with authority figures or unexpectedly becoming the centre of attention.

With over fourteen years’ clinical experience, I tailor therapy to the individual and the particular situations in which blushing anxiety occurs.

Where broader social anxiety is the main difficulty, you can also read about my work with Social Anxiety.
